Gudgeon Galore!

Well today I managed to squeeze in a short trip to a local river and I was suprised to find a large group of gudgeon feeding in my favourite spot, great! My first two fish were small dace that seemed to find my bait much faster than than the bottom feeding gudgeon. But soon enough I had caught plenty of gudgeon, which are my personal favourites because of their colours and willingingness to take your bait at times but then sometimes they wont even sniff your worm.

I also caught a nice roach, three sticklebacks and I lost a few trout, including a big 20″+ brown that got off after about 20 seconds, damn!

Just a few pics from Denmark

I just thought I’d share some pictures of micro fish I caught during my stay at my relative’s place in Denmark last month. I caught 11 small trout from a tiny stream and lots of three spined sticklebacks from the same stream thurther downstream. We also had a go at a local trout lake but all I caught were roach, rudd (I even got a golden rudd!) and a perch.

this was the biggest trout of the trip, great fun on super ultralight gear! (10 oz line and a daiwa soyokaze 20SR)

And a female stickleback from the same river.

I spent hours casting to this fish until it finally bit and I could land it.

A new spot

I got to fish a new spot all day today, I have taken a look at this stream before and I saw plenty of fish, but I got much more than I expected. my first fish was a minnow, and I caught plenty of these throughout the day including a new pb and a tiny one that I taped at 3cm. the next fish I caught was a dace, I also caught a few dace that averaged about 7″. I also caught a couple of small chub that I first thought were just more dace but on closer inspection I saw that the anal and dorsal fins were convex, a key differentiating factor with small chub. here is a picture of one of the little chubs.

I also caught a few rudd.

Now this is when the suprise came, I saw a large chub when I first arrived but it swam away and I didn’t see it again, then as I trotted a few grains of corn under some trees I saw the fish swim out and grab my bait, after a short but spirirted fight I had my prize, a big chub of about 13″, my first properly sized chub.

I remembered to take photos of the places I fished this time, so here is the spot where I took the chub.

And I also spent some time trying to catch some mystery fish here, but they were in a very hard to reach spot that I couldn’t position my bait in easily even when wading, and when I did get a good position the minnows would always swarm the bait first. Next time I think I’ll bring some cloudbait to distract the minnows and then I can target the unidentified fish. I first thought that they might be gigantic minnows (they were about 7″ long!) but after seeing their mouths I would say they are juvenile barbel, I can’t wait to get at them again as I have never caught a barbel before.

these past few days!

well these past few days have been a frenzy of fishing, I fished the river stour at the town of Bures yesterday and I caught 7 roach ranging from 2-7″ long and 3 perch around the same size. The perch were undoubtedly some of the prettiest ones I have ever seen, probably due to the extremely clear water and streamer weed growing in the river. unfortunately I left my camera at home so your going to have to use your imagination.

This morning I fished the same river further upstream where it is more of a chalkstream, shallow and fast flowing with a chalky/gravely bottom, I caught loads of minnows including several brightly coloured males in their spawning dress, unfortunately the camera was left behind again, but I took a picture of one of the males with my grandmothers phone, but it may be a while before I can post it up here. I then caught a little chub of around 10″ but I didn’t get a photo.

luckily I remembered the camera on my trip this afternoon, I fished the same river again at Sudbury where it is much wider and deeper, the wind was a bit of a problem for presenting a float but I still managed several roach, rudd and perch, although the perch were nowhere near as pretty as the ones from yesterday. here are the pictures I took.

perch (european perch, pretty different from yellow perch in appearance, this one was a juvenile so it looks quite simular, adults have a distict humped back and they tend to be much darker.)

Not so micro catches…

today I fished a different river to last time and I had my sights set on some of the large brown trout that inhabit this river and also a stickleback smaller than a one penny coin, almost certainly the ultimate challenge for any micro fisher! I saw plenty of small sticklebacks under 1″ swimming about in the roots of the trees lining the bank,  but they were too small to get a good enough hookup. I ended up catching plenty of small to medium sized dace and roach on the rod I wanted to catch a trout on, here are some photos of the fish.

I then caught a nice brown trout that I estimated to be around 11-12″ long, but it squirmed out of my hands and fell back into the water, thankfully I hadn’t unhooked it yet so I tried to bring it back in for attempt number two but the end of my rod got snagged in a tree and the fish came loose.

then as i was packing up I found this rather funky looking catapillar seeking refuge in the seam of my bag!

Overall it was a very enjoyable trip despite the fact I didn’t get my target 20″ trout and one penny stickleback. watch this space as I will be able to get out fishing quite a bit in the coming weeks.

Minnows and a bonus trout.

Hi all,

I have been out today and last week to a local stream trying to catch micros, last week I had lots of minnows and a few sticklebacks as well, this week however, the river was swollen, coloured and the current was much fatser than usual. I started off fishing with my light micro rod and a very light rig, I missed a few bites and then lost a nice trout so I switched over to my 7ft spinning rod and a slightly heavier float rig.I lost another big brown trout and then managed to land this beautiful little specimen and then the action stopped from that area.

I then managed two minnows on the way back.

(note: the pictures from today came out very blurry so I’m using last weeks pictures. they are the same species from exactly the same rirver so your not missing anything special.)

The last fish is one of the two three spined sticklebacks that I caught that day.
